BC Transit Victoria handyDART Centre
State-of-the-art LEED Gold transit operations and maintenance centre in View Royal, built for BC Transit’s handyDART fleet, with extensive double- and triple-glazed curtain walls, aluminum doors, and skylights by Sky Windows.

Sustainable, Accessible Transit Hub for Greater Victoria
The Victoria handyDART Centre, situated at 2401 Burnside Road in View Royal, B.C., is a newly constructed transit operations and maintenance facility designed to support the growing demand for accessible, door-to-door transit services in Greater Victoria.
The building is part of an $83.5-million investment by federal, provincial and regional transit agencies to modernize transit infrastructure, electrify the fleet, and expand service capacity across the region.
The centre replaces older facilities, provides enhanced maintenance and dispatch capabilities, and supports BC Transit’s transition to a low-carbon, fully electric bus fleet, reinforcing accessibility, reliability, and sustainability of public transit in the region.

The Scope
Sky Windows was engaged to deliver the full glazing and glasswork package for the new handyDART Centre. Their scope included aluminum curtain walls for punched openings, glazing for the maintenance building, triple-glazed glass for office areas, aluminum doors, glass doors on steel frames, automatic door operators for accessible pathways, and skylights on the roof. Given that the facility would support both vehicle maintenance and office/dispatch functions, the glazing systems needed to meet stringent performance standards: moisture resistance, durability, thermal efficiency (given the triple glazing in offices), and integration with a design built to LEED Gold energy-efficiency and environmental standards. The work also had to ensure accessibility and operational safety for a high-use transit maintenance facility.
The Outcome
The Victoria handyDART Centre was officially opened in April 2025 and began operations shortly thereafter. The facility supports an expanded handyDART fleet (capacity increasing from 56 to 63 buses in 2025) and enables additional service hours, improving transit access for people with disabilities and reducing wait times for bookings. The building meets LEED Gold and represents BC Transit’s first fully electrified site, aligning with provincial and federal climate-action commitments. The glazing and glass-work by Sky Windows ensures a durable, thermally efficient, accessible, and modern facility that supports both public transit operations and staff/maintenance needs.
