Enhancing Island-Wide Acute Care Capacity

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital serves as the central acute-care facility for central and northern Vancouver Island, providing critical medical, emergency, surgical, and long-term care services for communities from Nanaimo and Parksville to Port Alberni and the Island’s west coast. With 345 acute-care beds, more than 20 long-term care beds, and its role as the regional referral hospital north of Victoria, NRGH is vital for the health infrastructure of the region. The facility has undergone a series of expansions and upgrades to meet rising demand and modern healthcare requirements.

The Scope

As part of NRGH’s ongoing modernization, Sky Windows was contracted to supply commercial glazing for portions of the hospital campus. Given the hospital’s broad mix of functions, emergency care, inpatient wards, intensive care, ambulatory clinics, and upcoming specialized units, the glazing work had to meet rigorous standards for durability, safety, hygiene, and natural light access for patients and staff.

The Outcome

With the glazing work completed, NRGH continues to serve as a fully operational acute-care facility for central Vancouver Island, with modernized building envelopes that support ongoing expansions and upgrades. The improvements contribute to the hospital’s resilience, including sustainability and climate-adaptation features like daylight optimization, natural light penetration, and efficient building performance, helping ensure high-quality, safe, and accessible care for patients across a wide service area. Meanwhile, major new developments on site, including a new cancer centre, have been approved, with construction beginning in late 2025. The work by Sky Windows helps prepare the hospital campus to adapt to these expansions.
